Black August 24′ Salute

It was on this day in 1974 that George Jackson’s revolutionary message ignited a national social justice movement.

This movement has grown over many decades as people in prison not only refuse to succumb to the dehumanizing conditions prisons, jails and detention facilities perpetuate; but through their boldness and courage in leading social justice movements themselves including the 2016 and 2018 National Prison Strikes for which SawariMedia was recruited in 2018 as the communicating force uniting hundreds of grassroots groups, nonprofits, candidates for office and businesses in support of the demands of people in prison culminating with the 10th demand,

“The voting rights of all confined citizens serving prison sentences, pretrial detainees, and so-called “ex-felons” must be counted. Representation is demanded. All voices count.”

SawariMedia continues to hold this demand as a dear part of it’s organizing mission through the continuation of prisoner news publications, currently Prisonality Magazine which is printed and distributed to hundreds of jails and prisons across the United States sharing impacted voter guidelines, information on policy proposals in several states and methods for engagement for people in prisons that currently don’t have voting rights.

SawariMedia stands on the belief that civic engagement goes beyond the one act of casting a ballot and our work empowers and equips incarcerated citizens seeking to engage civically.
